The Hueman Collective Reading List

Every other month, a staff member from Auburn Oil Co. Booksellers selects a book for our reading list. This month’s selection is "From the Desk of Zoe Washington" by Janae Marks, chosen by Tyra Wilson.

In the mood for something sweet? Enter Janae Marks’ wonderful middle-grade book “From The Desk of Zoe Washington.” When I want a pick-me-up read that’s equal parts feel-good and socially conscious, this is the book I reach for. Now don’t let its reading level fool you; this book expertly delivers an unforgettable story with complex, lovable characters. Not to mention, there’s a killer playlist to round everything out.

The book opens on Zoe’s 12th birthday when she finds a letter in the mail from the father she’s never met. Zoe promptly sets out on a quest to unravel the mystery behind her dad’s absence and all the family secrets that come with it. Add in a little tension with her best friend and a dash of dreams to become the next famous kid baker, and you’ve got yourself quite a confection! Even with its heavy moments, this book finishes as sweet and warm as eating a slice of grandma’s sweet potato pie.

I felt so seen while reading this book. The representation of Black girlhood as multifaceted, justice-oriented and surrounded by loving support wasn’t a common theme in the books I read in middle school. We witness Zoe discover the impact of injustice and take action to fight against it. When she steps into her power to stand up against wrong, we feel like we can step into our power, too. The connection she develops with her dad inspires healing for her entire family, speaking to the influence kids can have to change their own lives and the lives of those they love for the better. My mom and I read this book together and both loved it. “From The Desk of Zoe Washington” is definitely a read all ages will enjoy.
